When he registered for the WWI draft, he stated he was born 17 Apr 1888 at Polinkha, Volin (Volyn), Russia, and on the 1920 census the age he provided corresponded to his having been born in 1888.
On the 1930 census, his age corresponded to having been born in 1890; and on the 1940 census, in 1891.
In 1937, his wife Sara filed her Petition for Naturalization, stating that her husband had been born 12 May 1892 in Bessarabia, Romania. In 1943, when he filed his own Petition, he listed his name as Leizer Fainer, a.k.a. Louis Faneuil, and gave his birth information as 02 May 1891 in Sherbowitz [Chernovitz?], Russia.
The previous year, when he registered for the WWII draft, Louis stated he had been born 28 May 1891 at Voollney (Volyn), Russia.
The only thing that's certain is that whether he was born in the Volyn oblast or the Chernovitz oblast, they are both now part of Ukraine. [Bessarabia, once part of Moldovia, was occupied by Russia and later divided between Moldova and Ukraine.]
Louis was working as a cutter in 1914 and in 1917 was a cutter at Kingston Bias Company in Boston. By the 1940 census, he owned his own business, the Novelty Bias Binding Company, where his son Phillip was employed as a salesman.
