Mrs. Doris Gamble

Mrs. Doris Mae Cutler Gamble, age 89, died on Thursday, June 21, 2018 at her daughter’s residence in Martin.

Doris was the youngest daughter of ten children. She always said that by the time she arrived, her mother was tired of raising girls so Doris spent all her time with her dad doing work on the dairy farm in Wisconsin. Upon graduation from high school she followed in the career path of most of her sisters and became a teacher. Doris was a life-long educator beginning in Palmyra, Wisconsin where she met her future husband, Blaine Gamble, who was originally from Mishawaka, Indiana. They married on August 25, 1951 in Milladore, Wisconsin and moved to Indiana. After three years in Lakeville, they moved to New Carlisle where Doris taught 6th grade science and math for ten years at Olive Township Elementary. She was promoted to principal and served in that capacity for 23 years until she was promoted to Assistant Superintendent for the New Prairie United School Corporation. The year prior to her retirement on June 30, 1994 she was the Superintendent there.

In 2011 Doris and Blaine moved to Martin, Tennessee. She was an avid gardener and her neighbors on Big John Drive would tell you that not a day passed where Doris was not outside working around her home. She would even pick up sticks and leaves in other yards as she walked her dog Tippy. Doris was an active member of the Methodist Church in New Carlisle (where she was known for her pies) and then a member of the First United Methodist Church Martin. She was a former member of the National Education Association, Indiana Elementary Principals Association, and Association of Student Teachers.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Blaine Gamble, parents Leslie D. Cutler and Bertha Johnsrud Cutler, sisters Illa Ironside, Myra Ironside, Janice Sullivan, Lynette Noble, Merita Knuteson, Bernadien Thomas, Valletta Brimacomb, and brothers Gerald Cutler and Willard Cutler.

She is survived by her daughter Shirley Jean Borden, son-in-law Milo Borden, grandchild Matthew Daniel Borden all of Martin, Tennessee, sister-in-law Eileen Albini Northbrook, Illinois, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Saturday, June, 23 2:00 at the First United Methodist Church Martin with Rev. Randy Cooper officiating. Burial will follow in East Side Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 12:30 pm on Saturday until funeral time at 2:00. Arrangements are through Murphy Funeral Home, Martin.
Memorials may be made to either Methodist Church.
