Daughter of James French and Golah McCumber Daniel, wife of Frank Monroe Johnson.

MULLINS - Clara French Daniel Johnson, 85, affectionately nicknamed “Mutt” by one of her five older sisters, passed away peacefully in Greenville after a seven year battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Mrs. Johnson was born to James French Daniel and Golah McCumber Daniel in Mullins, and was raised on the Daniel family farm in the Smithboro Community of Marion County.

In 1950, she married Frank Monroe Johnson, Jr., known as “Buddy” to his tobacco farming family in the Zion Community of Marion County. Mutt and Buddy continued the farming operations of both families for the last 67 years in Marion County where the Johnson family farm now includes The Homestead at Zion on the original home site.

The Johnsons raised eight children, originally at their home in Zion and, later, also at their home in the nearby town of Marion. Mutt is most remembered in recent years as the grandmother of thirteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Visiting MaMa Mutt included a special activity for the children, long walks several times a day with Mutt’s favorite dogs Lucie and Haley. Mrs. Johnson left a lasting legacy in Marion for her precisely timed, numerous daily walks on Main Street Marion with her dog, every day, rain or shine. In recent years, Mrs. Johnson lived a happy life in The Gardens of Eastside and the National Health Care Community, both in Greenville, not far from her favorite store for decades, Krispy Kreme.

Mrs. Johnson will rest in the Chapel of Cox-Collins Funeral Home on Friday, November 17, 2017 from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. for visitors to have quite time with her before her family arrives in Mullins for the funeral.

Family and friends are invited to join the Johnson family for a service to honor the life of Mutt Johnson in the Chapel of Cox-Collins Funeral Home on Saturday, November 18, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. A private burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion, where Mrs. Johnson will be laid to rest with her family.
