John was born to Rev. William Babington and Janet Maitland as their youngest of six children.

He was first married to Eliza Roebuck on Dec. 1, 1808 in Fort Saint George, Madras, India. Eliza and John had seven children; Catherine, William, Eliza, Anne, John, Grace and Charles.

After his first wife's death in 1822, he married Jane (maiden name unknown, possibly Clarke) in November of 1826. Jane and John had one child, Richard Clarke Babington. Sadly, Jane died giving birth to this child on Aug. 9, 1827.

John was married a third time to Jane G. Couper on Jan. 31, 1832 in Troqueer, Kirkcudbright, Scotland. They had one child, Alexander Melville Babington.

John was employed by the Honourable East India Company Madras Service, initially in India and then later in life in Edinburgh.

He died at the age of 66. John's wife survived him by 26 years, living until 1878 in Edinburgh.

In memory of John Babington Esquire, for many years in the Madras Civil Service, who departed this life at the Bridge of Allan on the 22nd April 1852 aged 66. And of Jane Couper, his wife, who died in Edinburgh 22nd July 1878, aged 87. Also, A. Melville Babington, who died in Dumfries, on the 7th September 1854, aged 21 years. Anne Amelia, daughter of John Babington, and Eliza his wife, Born 22nd August, 1814, Died 11th May, 1845.
