(1943 - 2009)

Richard C. Hallwachs, age 66, of 5531 Luckow Lane, Manitowoc, passed away surrounded by his loving family Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009, at Shady Lane Nursing Care Center.

Richard was born on March 17, 1943, in Manitowoc, son of the late Harley Hallwachs and Florence (Freidenberger) Hallwachs Hackel. He grew up on a farm and graduated in 1961 from Lincoln High School. At Lincoln High School, he was a three-year letter winner on the wrestling team and served as co-captain on the 1961 team that finished fifth in the state tournament. Richard served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the 6th Special Forces Group Green Beret serving during the Vietnam era from 1964-1966. On Oct. 21, 1967, he married the former Michele A. Patrick at St. Casimir Catholic Church in Northeim.

Richard was employed as a 1st class engineer with the Manitowoc Health Care Center for 30 years retiring in 2002. He was a member of the Newton Lions Club, serving as vice-president, president and past president of the Newton Lions. He was president of the local No. 301 Foundry Workers Union, president of local No. 1288 AFSCME, member of AMVETS Post No. 99 of Manitowoc, American Legion Drews-Bleser Post No. 88 of Manitowoc, Special Forces Chapter No. 73, vice-president and Pee Wee commissioner in the Manitowoc County Youth Sports Association.

Richard was an avid bowler and bowled for over 40 years. He played softball, then coached and umpired youth baseball in Newton, coaching Pee Wee and Pony baseball teams in Newton for over 30 years. In 1989, he received the achievement-appreciation award from Manitowoc County Youth Sports at the enshrinement banquet of the Lakeshore Hall of Fame. In his retirement years Richard became an avid golfer.

Survivors include his wife: Michele Hallwachs, Manitowoc; one son and daughter-in-law: Michael (Bonnie) Hallwachs, Manitowoc; one grandson: Joshua Janda; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Donald (Deanna) Hallwachs, Two Rivers; Kenneth (Lorna) Hallwachs, Lakeside, Calif.; one sister and brother-in-law: Judith (Lynn) Helke, Newton; three sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law: Margie (Matthew) Meyer, Manitowoc; Theresa Patrick, Manitowoc; Jim (Sheryl) Patrick, Manitowoc; nine stepbrothers and stepsisters: George (Val) Hackel; Trish (Jim) Lenhart; Lee (Dot) Hackel; Marla (Paul) Garber; Tim (Pat) Hackel; Donna (Judd) Vanden Heuvel; Jeff (Barb) Hackel; Dan (Jackie) Hackel; David Hackel; nieces and nephews include: Katie (Nate) Walkner, Joe Buchholz (Jamie Murtie), Anne Buchholz, Jesse (Nikki) Patrick, Frances (Michael) Bass, Casey Patrick (Tracy Cobb), Scott Hallwachs, Kristen Hallwachs, Kelly Ertel, Kim (Dan) Driscoll, Karrie Helke, James Hallwachs, Grace Hallwachs Levi Dinkla, Jess Dinkla and Luke Dinkla; one special uncle: Steve Urbanec; many other relatives and friends survive. He was preceded in death by his parents: Harley Hallwachs and Florence Hallwachs Hackel; step-father: Joe Hackel; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Michael and Ann (Urbanec) Patrick; paternal grandparents: Robert and Mary (Prigge) Hallwachs; maternal grandparents: Charles and Flora (Mayer) Friedenberger; nine aunts and uncles and one cousin: Nancy Windus.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 8100 Brunner Road, Newton. Rev. Gerald Foley will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will take place at St. Casimir Cemetery, Northeim with military graveside services accorded by Amvets Post No. 99 of Manitowoc.

Relatives and friends may call on Monday at the Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Home of Manitowoc, 818 State St., from 4 until 8 p.m. and on Tuesday at the church from 9 until 11 a.m.

Richard loved being involved in the community and gave a lot to our youth. He stayed very involved in local government and was truly an individual who wanted to give back to the community. You will be missed by so many.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Barylak and his staff at the Vince Lombardi Cancer Care Center and all the staff at Shady Lane Nursing Care Center during his short stay there. Your kindness and compassion will never be forgotten.
