He was a measurer and lived in New York City. According to Bergen he first lived in Gowanus and was a member of the Brooklyn Dutch Church in 1677, and his name was on the assessment rolls in Brooklyn in 1675 and 1676.

He and Elsje Jans were members of the at Reformed Protestant Dutch Church, Flatbush, Kings Co., Long Island, New York, in 1677 at Gowanus.

On 7 May 1690, Whereas the widow of Johannes Schaers being to remarry to Hendrick Tyssen and before the solomation of her second wedlock she has chose for guardians and overseers of her children procreated by her by her said husband Johannes Schaers, deceased, by name Christoffel Schaers, Heltie Schaers and Sara Schaers, to wit Adriaen Bennet and Cosenradus Vander Beeck...said widow is to pay to each of the said children upon the day of their lawful age or marriage each 700 guilders in money, and also 700 guilders in like specie to Maria Schaers married to Wouter Van Pelt within two years of the date here of, and the eldest son by name Christoffel Schaers is to have 50 guilders more.
