Born in 1636 or 1637 at Gowanus, Kings County, (according to testimony on 14 Feb. 1664, he stated he was then 27 years of age, residing at New Utrecht).

Married Agnietje Jans Van Dyck, daughter of Jan Thomaszen Van Dyck and Tryntje Agges, at Old First Dutch Reformed Church, Breuckelen (Brooklyn), Kings Co., Long Island, New York, on 3 December 1662.

After his marriage he resided in New Utrecht, Long Island on property which his wife had inherited from her father. Adriaen also owned extensive real estate fronting on the bay at Yellow Hook (now Bay Ridge). On 29 May 1661 he was received as a member of the Brooklyn Dutch Church. He was recorded as a member and deacon in 1677 (according to Bergen, which is not in accordance with the published transcript the records [HYSB:1897:137] but does appear in that printed in Stiles, History of Brooklyn, v.1, p.428, of the records made before 1867 by Bergen). He served as Constable of New Utrecht in 1676. Ariaen Willemsen and associates of New Utrecht, in 1673 petitioned for land on Staten Island. If it was received, he probably never occupied it. In 1677 he also owned lots nos. 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 fronting on the Bay and extending back to the present day Third Avenue at Yellow Hook. On 26 Jan 1681/82, he sold his Bay Ridge premises to Denyse Theunise and his New Utrecht house and lot to Hans Harmense Van Barkelo. He also sold his farm in 1681 to Carl Janse Van Dyck and moved back to Gowanus, where he had bought land on 14 Jan 1681 from his mother for 12,000 gl. of good merchantable wheat. The property was later known as the Schermerhorn farm at Gowanus. He is found on the Brooklyn assessment roll for 26 Sept. 1683 and was rated at 1 poll, 5 horses, 6 cows, 1 ox of 4 years, 4 oxen of 4 years (sic), and 3 oxen of 1 year, £109, 25 morgens of land £50; total £159. His name appears in the Dongan patent of 13 May 1686. He was a commissioner in 1687, and he appears as Adriaen Bennet on the 1698 census at Brooklyn with a family consisting of 1 man, 2 women, and 4 children. The last known reference to Adriaen was on 9 Feb. 1703/04 when "Adryan Bennet and wife Ananitie" sold to son Abraham land in the latter's possession bounded by that of John and William Bennet. He had previously sold land in Gowanus to Simon Aerson and Agias Van Dyck.

Adriaen did not leave a will, and there are gaps in the Brooklyn Dutch Church records during the period in which his children were born, so a precise record of his family is difficult to construct. The last confirmed record of Adriaen is 7 Oct 1703, when he was a baptism sponsor.

W. V. Ledley (NYGBR 93:199-200) assigns two additional sons, Willem (no. 8) and Cornelis (no. 13) to Adriaen Bennet, calling them "perhaps." No evidence that either existed has been found.
