Duane Leighton, age 82, of Madison, died peacefully on Sunday, November 26, 2017 at the Bethel Lutheran Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM on Wednesday, November 29th at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with Father DeWayne Kayser as the Celebrant. Visitation will be 5-7 PM on Tuesday at the Weiland Funeral Chapel with a prayer service at 7 PM. Visitation will continue on Wednesday one hour prior to mass at the funeral chapel followed by procession to the church for mass. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery.

Duane Harley Leighton was born April 25, 1935 in Madison, SD to Harley & Edna (Arke) Leighton. On August 30, 1958, he married Martha Boyda in Oldham, SD and to this union eight children were born. They celebrated 28 years together before Martha’s passing on October 26, 1986.

He worked for the City of Madison for 30 years, where he worked a few years at the dog catcher, before moving to the street department and eventually retiring in 1995. He was an Army veteran, member of Knights of Columbus, American Legion and active member of Alcoholics Anonymous. Duane enjoyed going fishing with friends as often as he was able.

Duane is survived by four daughters, Charlotte (Roger) Hanson of Madison, JoLynn (Dan) Yunginger of Howard, Mary Schultz of Pipestone, MN and Carol (Pat) Dreyer of Dell Rapids; three sons, Mike Leighton of Madison, Chad Leighton of Howard and Carl Leighton of Portage, MI; two sisters, Neva (Lyman) Carson of Sioux Falls and Annie (Jim) DeLay of Egan and one brother, Jerry (Barb) Leighton of Sacramento, CA; 14 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and many nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter at birth; one brother & one sister.
