Lela was born in Anderson Co, TX to Marshall Luther "Babe" and Fannie Ura Camp Hamby. Her parents are also buried in Ferguson Cemetery. She died in Elkhart, TX and shares a stone with her husband, Joyal Clyde Ashley, who she married 14 March 1936. She is survived by one son Kenneth Marshall Ashley; two daughters, Elwanda Ashley Dunnam and Arlene Ashley Long, both of Elkhart; one brother, Vernon Hamby of Palestine; two sisters, Hazel Hopper of Palestine and Ethel McGaugh of Cleburne; one granddaughter; six step-grandchildren, 12 step great-grandchildren and seven step great-great grandchildren. Her obituary appeared in Palestine Herald-Press, Friday, 11 February 2005.
