-------------------------

Mary Ellen Zittle, the younger daughter of Sarah (née Summers) and John Zittle, was born in 1839 in Washington County, Maryland, probably in or near Zittlestown. Mary Ellen's mother died before 1845. Her father remarried in February 1845, and he died before 1850.

Mary E. Zittle in 1850 was enumerated in the Sharpsburg District, Washington County, household of her grandmother Elizabeth Summers (died 1853). From 1860 through 1880, Mary E. Zittle was enumerated in Boonsboro, Washington County, employed as a domestic servant in the household of cabinet maker Jonas Davis.* She did not marry.

In 1900, Mary E. Zittle was enumerated in Boonsboro with her niece Sarah Elizabeth "Sallie" Alexander and Sallie's son Harry A. Thomas, age 4. Ten years later, Mary E. Zittle, living on "own income," resided in Boonsboro with (great) nephew Harry A. Thomas, then age 14, a street newsboy.

Mary E. Zittle died in 1916 at her home in Boonsboro. A death notice identified her "nephew"—actually great-nephew—Harry A. Thomas as her "only surviving relative."†
