Elizabeth Ann Zittle, elder daughter of Sarah (née Summers) and John Zittle, was born about 1835 in Washington County, Maryland, probably in or near Zittlestown. Elizabeth's mother died before 1845. Her father remarried in February 1845, and he died before 1850. Elizabeth Ann is not found in the 1850 U.S. Census, but her younger sister Mary Ellen, age 11, was enumerated in the household of their grandmother Elizabeth Summers, age 73.

Elizabeth Ann Zittle and Jacob Michael Alexander appear to have married sometime in the mid-1860s, but neither a marriage record nor an announcement have been found.* The couple are known to have had one daughter, Sarah Elizabeth, born in 1866.† The family of three in 1870 were enumerated in Middletown, Frederick County, Maryland; he was cooper.

The 1880 U.S. Census indicates that Elizabeth Alexander was widowed.‡ In 1900, she was a warden at Bellevue, the Washington County Alms House in Hagerstown, Maryland. (Her daughter Sarah and grandson Harry then lived with her unmarried sister Mary Ellen Zittle in Boonsboro, Washington County. Sarah was a nurse at Bellevue.) Not found in the 1910 U.S. Census, Elizabeth A. Alexander died in 1912 in Boonsboro. A death notice mentions that she was for 10 years a warden at Bellevue.
