We'd gone to the shelter in hopes of getting some other dog breed, but when we saw Apollo, we knew he was the dog for us. We had another Doberman at home, Achilles, whom we'd rescued the year before, and we liked the fierce loyalty and high intelligence of the breed.
I remember that Apollo laid on the back seat shaking the whole way home. He was so scared. But he quickly adapted to our household and loved his new family.
He was one of the best dogs we ever had--so obedient, loyal, and calm. We'd take him camping out in the middle of nowhere in Texas and he'd walk calmly beside us while our other Doberman chased anything that came along. Both dogs really enjoyed those many excursions.
But in the autumn of 1994, Apollo started yelping horribly in severe pain--it was one of the most agonizing sounds I've ever heard. We took him to the vet and was told that he had severe arthritis in the neck. There was nothing they could do for him. There was some experimental surgery at the time but it sounded horrible in itself and we didn't want to put Apollo through it. We got a second opinion and was told the same thing, and so we decided to put Apollo to sleep.
I have some photos of him and will post them after I scan them in.
We will always miss this beloved family member.
