Robert Ewing (II) is listed as the 6th of 12 children of Robert Ewing (I) and Mary Baker. The youngest of these 12 children was Rev. Finis Ewing (1773-1841), a famed minister and one of the founders of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Robert Ewing (II) moved to Tennessee in 1784 and from there served two sessions in the North Carolina Legislature.

Robert Ewing (II) married Jane McLean on July 4, 1787 and had children (Judge) Ephriam Ewing, Elizabeth Ewing, and Robert Allen Ewing (III).

Robert Ewing (II) served in the Kentucky Legislature for 21 years from 1797, sixteen of them in the Senate, the last two as its President.

Robert Ewing (II) achieved the rank of General and served in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.
