Lester graduated from Staunton High School in 1949, and served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and was stationed in Ipswich England. He married Dolores (Dennis) Swearingen on August 19, 1955.
Lester was a life long member of Peniel Methodist Church, where he was actively involved until his death. He served several positions in the church over the years, including Chairman of the Board, Superintendent of Sunday school, Chairman of the Trustees, and was a Sunday School teacher from 1950 until last Sunday. Mr. Swearingen was the secretary and treasure of the Town and Country Methodist Men, and a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge #541.
He worked from International Business Machines in Greencastle from 1953 to 1987. Lester enjoyed spending time with his family, and the Hardees Breakfast Club.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Lillian Thomas and Mary Ellen Honey; and by his brother Chester Swearingen.
Survivors Include his wife of 62 years, Dolores Swearingen, son Jay (Kelly) Swearingen, daughter Jana (Darrell) Smith, grandchildren Matt (Mary) Wright, Seth Wright, Bethany Wright, Abby Wright and Austin Swearingen, and one great grand daughter, Alison Wright.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at Peniel Methodist Church in Brazil with Pastor Jeff Bridgewater officiating and burial to follow at Bee Ridge Cemetery. The family will accept friends for visitation on Wednesday from 11:00 A.M. until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to Clay County Food Pantry, envelopes will be available at the church.
