Episcopal Bishop of Durham, England. He succeeded Henry Montagu Villiers in this position and served from 1861 until 1879. The fourth son of Thomas Baring, 2nd Baronet, he received a private education and afterwards attended Christ Church College in Oxford, England. In June 1830 he was ordained a deacon and the following year he was ordained a priest. He began his ecclesiastical career at St Ebbe's, Oxford and Kings Worthy before taking the benefice of All Souls', Marylebone in 1847. He moved to Limpsfield in 1855 but was soon elected Bishop of Gloucester and Bristol. In 1861 he translated to the see of Durham whereas Bishop of Durham he came into conflict with High Church clergy. In February 1879 he resigned his post due to poor health and was succeeded by Joseph Lightfoot. He died seven months later at the age of 72.
