Mattie was the daughter of Thomas and Martha Black Warden, and was probably born in Montgomery or Wythe County. In about 1832, she migrated with her family to Fayette County, Virginia, which is now the area of Raleigh County, West Virginia. Mattie and her family were early pioneers of the area. She married John Greer on the 21st day of July 1851 in Raleigh County, Virginia (now West Virginia), and is listed as giving birth to 7 children in her 1900 United States Federal Census record.
