Mother, librarian, public servant and political activist Alberta "Bertie" Barker died at home in Boise Monday, Mar. 26, 2007 after a long illness.

Mrs. Barker was born Sept. 15, 1930 in Avon, Illinois, the daughter of Benjamin Frederick Elliott and Naomi Glyn Elliott. She was raised by foster parents, Everett and Lucile Reihm in Avon where she attended school and graduated in 1948 from Avon High School.

She was graduated from Knox College with a Bachelor of Arts in business. There she met and married Gordon Ford Barker of Sandwich, Ill, Aug. 23, 1952.

They had two sons, Roland and Jonathan.

Mrs. Barker was active in the Young Republicans and Dekalb County Republican Women in the 1960s. She served a precinct committeeman for the Republican Party in Sandwich.

She also was active in the Sandwich Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and served as its president. Later she was elected to the Sandwich Board of Education for two terms in the 1970s.

For many years she was the head librarian at the Sandwich Township Library, a reflection of her life-long love of books. She also loved antiques and was one of the founders of the Sandwich Antique Show in the 1960s. She also served as co-treasurer of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts Antique Show and Sale in the 1980s.

She and her husband moved to Minneapolis and St. Paul in 1975. She started her own company, Columbia Computer Systems, Inc. and handled bookkeeping for many businesses until she retired in 2005.

She was active in the Sandwich First Congregational Church, serving as a choir director in the 1960s. She also played organ at the Methodist Church at View St. and Armstrong in St Paul, MN. until it closed in 2002. She was a member of Chapter FO of the Sisterhood of P.E.O.

Mrs. Barker moved to Boise in 2005 to be near her son, Roland, her grandchildren and great-grandchild.

She is survived by her sons, Roland (Tina) of Boise, Jonathan, of Colorado Springs, CO.; four grandchildren, Daniel (Alycia) of Renton, WA, David of Boise, Nicole of Durango, CO, and Gordon of Craig, CO. She also has one great-grand-child, Alex of Boise.

Memorial graveside services will be held at the Avon (Illinois) Cemetery, Thursday, April 5th at 2:00 PM. Corman Memorial Home of Avon will be handling the arrangements. A memorial service will be held Friday, April 6th at 3:30 PM at the Burkhart-Eighner Funeral Home, 606 E. Arnold Road, Sandwich, Illinois, with the Rev. Robert Dell officiating. A visitation is scheduled at the funeral home an hour before the service.

Donations can be made to the Sandwich District Library, 107 E. Center Street, Sandwich, Illinois 60548 in her name in lieu of flowers.
