Dick's family roots go back to the Ozarks in the state of Arkansas. Even though he was born in California, the rest of his family, except for Kaye, was born in the area around Harrison, Arkansas. He was the youngest of five chilren, therefore, his middle name Quentin. After getting his degree at UCLA, it wasn't long before he headed for the beautiful state of Hawaii in 1959 and settled down. He married a local girl named Helen Gentry at Honolulu in 1961 and had three daughters and a son, Linda, Laura, Lana and Spencer. Helen passed away on August 15, 2021.

Dick and his brother, Paul, were the only members of the family who earned college degrees. Paul retired as a public school principal in California. Even though he taught school and retired as a counselor from Waimea High School, Dick always had an itch to be in business. When he lived in Sylmar, California, he owned a gas station on the highway to Newhall and, later, a pet-food store. While on Kauai he owned the Lawai Valley Nursery. He liked to live close to the soil and was an animal lover.

He was a long-time supporter of the Democratic Party, remembering well the reforms that helped his family during the Great Depression. In his younger days he was also an active leader of the Kauai County Farm Bureau and HSTA.

Dick was always good to me and was ready to give me help when I needed it.

Larry Coffman, nephew.
