Mr. Cook lived at 1207 Maxwell Hill Road, for the past 23 years, being formerly of Kopperston. He attended Oceana High School and served as master sergeant in the U.S. Army infantry from 1949 to 1952. He worked 48 years in the coal mining industry, with 39 years at Eastern Associated Coal Corp. He held various positions, including managing the Kopperston, Keystone and Herndon operations, as well as manager of longwalls and manager of all outside heavy equipment. Mr. Cook spent three years in the early 1970s as general manager of Winifrede Division of Carbon Fuel Co. of Charleston. After retirement from Eastern Associated Coal Corp., he formed and was president of Mine Operations and Maintenance Specialists Inc., a mine consulting company where he stayed active until his illness.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Lois "Jean" Maynard-Cook (1938-2018) whom he married on December 19, 1953 in Oceana, Wyoming County, WV (per WV Marriage License Register, Wyoming County, WV, 1953, Page 37, Application Date: December 16, 1953); a son, Henry E. Cook Jr. and his wife, Z. Dianne Cook, of Pikeville, KY; a daughter, Melinda L. Cook of Beckley; a grandson, Henry E. “Tripp” Cook III, and a granddaughter, Ashlie B. Cook, both of Pikeville, KY; a brother, Harry Franklin Cook (1924-1999) of Kopperston; a sister, Clara B. Cook-Stewart of Vincennes, IN; and many extended family members and friends.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 17, 1998 at Evans and Evans Memorial Chapel, Oceana, with Luther Raines officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.
