Robert was born in Ireland, although his family was of Scottish heritage. He emigrated to the United States with his mother in the 1840s. In 1851 he went to California with his brother-in-law, James H. Forsyth. After returning to Peoria in 1854, Robert moved to Muskegon, Michigan, with his wife and children and his wife's parents. He died of Bright's disease.
