Silver "Marie" (Hankins) Mead, 69, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away April 18, 2015 at William Newton Hospital after losing her courageous battle to cancer.
Marie was born August 1, 1945 in Winfield, Kansas to Silver Evelyn (Barnhart) and Carl Parker Hankins. She was raised and received her education in Dexter. After graduating from Dexter High School, she moved to Winfield starting her family and career. Marie worked at Winfield Laundry and the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center. During her twenty plus years at the WSH & TC as well as after her retirement she worked alongside Ron, painting, mowing and raising sheep She continued helping Ron after retirement. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and raising sheep. Her family includes: Her sidekick and partner in crime of 30 years: Ronald Baker of Winfield; Her brothers: Milton Hankins of Burden; Chuck Hankins of Winfield;
Her sister: Mildred Pool of Arkansas City; Her children: Ronald Hamilton and wife, Sunita of El Dorado; Carla Hamilton of Peabody; Sheri Wilson of Arkansas City; Amy Mattocks and husband, Keith of Winfield; Christina Kester and husband, Daniel of Wichita; Andrea Holt of Winfield; Chad Mead of Missouri; Sara Yingling of Winfield; Her 26 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and two grandchildren. The family will hold a Celebration of Life on Friday, April 24, 2015 from 6 to 8 P.M. at the south end of the grandstands at the Winfield Fairgrounds. Memorials have been established in Marie's name for the Cancer Center of Kansas and for River Cross Hospice. Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service. A big thank-you to Papa Ron from all of the kids for taking great care of our mom the last two years.s
