Funeral services for Sol May, 80,
prominent retired business leader of
Charleston, who died Friday evening
at his home, 825 Edgewood
drive, will be held Sunday mornning
at 11 o'clock at the residence
with Rabbi Ariel Goldburg officiating.
One of the founders of Schwabe
and May company, one of Charleston's
leading clothing stores, Mr.
May retired from active business
participation in 1912.
Death came to him after an illness
of two years.
Born in Baltimore, Md., on
Christmas day, 18S6. Mr. May came
to Charleston with his parents, Meyer
Hirsch and Sophia Strauss May,
(who were both born in Germany)
when 2 yrs old He was educated
in the. city's public schools.
A member of the Virginia Street
temple and the temple board, Mr.
May had been a life-long church
member.
He married Annie Kaufman, of
Charleston, on November 21, 1883.
In 1933 they celebrated their golden
wedding anniversary.
Surviving are his widow, his sons,
Leon May V. May and Hubert May,
both of Charleston; a daughter. Mrs.
Leonard M. (Carrie) Stern
, Camden. Ark.;
two- sisters, Mrs. H. Henry Cohen,
Charleston, and Mrs. Isadore
Schwabe, New York City; brother,
Philip May, Charleston; and
three grandchildren, Leonard Stern,
Camden, Ark.; and Polly Anne and
Leon May, Charleston.
Burial will be in Spring Hill
cemetery, B'eni Isreal, Hebrew Section.
The Simpson mortuary will be in
charge of services.
Active pallbearers will be Phillip
Pfeifer, Jerome Schwabe, Frank
Baer, M. Howard May, Marcus
Smith and Edgar Moses.

May Shoe Company was sold in 1976 to
Schwabe-May.

Mr. and Mrs. May were married
in Charleston at the State Street
Temple November 21, 1883.
