Charles E. Gratton, age 84, of Pittsfield, IL passed away on Monday, March 19, 2018 at Eastside Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center surrounded by family. He was born on April 6, 1933 to Arthur and Dorothy Whittaker Gratton in Pittsfield, IL. Charles married the love of his life, Bessie McDonald, on October 31, 1953 in Pittsfield and she preceded him in death on August 21, 2009.

Charles attended school in Pittsfield before joining the United States Army. After being discharged, he went on to work for the City of Pittsfield and retired as a Gas and Water Superintendent in 1989 after 35 years. Charles was a member of the Pittsfield Church of the Nazarene and the Pittsfield American Legion Post #152. He also was a member of the Pike County Farm Bureau and the NRA. Charles loved tinkering in the garage in his free time. He enjoyed camping, deer hunting, and fishing in earlier years. He and Bessie liked riding on his motorcycle and the whole family enjoyed many vacations to Colorado as they were growing up. Charles really loved spending time with his family.

He is survived by two sons, Charles (Linda) Gratton of Pittsfield, IL and Richard (Angie) Gratton of Baylis, IL; three daughters, Patty (Tom) Cawthon, Donna (Bobby) Lipcamon, and Cindy (Rod) Prentice, all of Pittsfield, IL; 16 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and one brother, Dave (Gertie) Gratton of Pittsfield, IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bessie; siblings, Jim Gratton and Ada Forbes; and half siblings, Roy Gratton, Bernard Gratton, and Helen Welch.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 25, 2018 at 2:00 PM at Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield with Reverend Jon Kroeze officiating. Interment will follow at Pittsfield West Cemetery. There will be a visitation on Saturday, March 24, 2018 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association or Pittsfield Church of the Nazarene.
