Alfred was the youngest of five born to Frank and Ida Dampier. He was educated in Nipigon and St. John's Anglican in Winnipeg. His first date with Cookie was on a Friday the 13th but superstition played no part in the wonderful life they made together. They married on August 22, 1952 and had a beautiful family of four children. Survived to mourn his loss are his loving wife of 65 years, 4 children; 9 grandchildren; a sister-in-law; 12 great grandchildren also numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Frank and Ida Dampier, brother John, sister Mae and brother-in-law Eric Corner, sister Nora in early childhood, brother Henry in infancy, parents-in-law William and Aili Lyyski and brother –in-law Oliver Lyyski (Marilyn). Alfred lived a full, rewarding life always putting family first. We all have fond memories of him at Red Mount Ski Hill and Caribou Cove, he loved boating and being out on Lake Superior taking pride in all of his boats; The Muskrat, Muskrat Love and Muskrat III. After he stopped boating he spent many years on Michipicoten Island putting his construction skills to use building a sauna and the “HACIENDA”. He was an avid sports enthusiast enjoying tennis, downhill skiing, curling and cross-country skiing. In his younger years he was an avid tennis player winning many trophies and was instrumental in forming the Tennis Club in Beardmore. Downhill skiing started on the hill across the Nipigon River, then many enjoyable years at Moose Mountain in Beardmore. Dad and his brother and John developed and operated Red Mount Ski in Nipigon providing many enjoyable years of good skiing to local residents. Dad was also able to enjoy the slopes of British Columbia, Austria and Switzerland. When downhill skiing went by the wayside, Dad took up cross country skiing; he made trails across the river to his ski camp (Shacko Alfie) enjoying many weekends and gatherings there with family and friends. Dad would ski in frequently by himself to feed the birds. He also participated in the Sibley Ski Tour (20K) skiing with ease with Mom and other family members. Dad was an avid curler, curling both in Beardmore and Nipigon. He was the Nipigon Curladrome Treasurer for 35 years and received in honourary life membership. Right to the end Dad enjoyed sports watching tennis and curling from his hospital bed. His working career started as a bank accountant in Nipigon where he met the love of his life Cookie. From there they moved to Beardmore to be a camp clerk for Brompton Pulp and Paper, then transferring to Nipigon with St. Lawarence Corporation and retiring in 1990 as the Cost Accountant with Domtar Packaging in Red Rock. The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of the Nipigon District Memorial Hospital for the wonderful and compassionate care given to Dad during his final journey.
