Singer. Along with her father Roebuck 'Pops' Staples, brother Pervis and sisters Marvis and Cleotha, she formed the 1970s Blues and Funk ensemble "The Staple Singers." She began singing along with her siblings in her family's church during her early youth. She replaced her brother Pervis after he went to serve in the Army and contributed to such hits as "Heavy Makes You Happy" (1971), "Respect Yourself" (1971, achieved platinum status), "I'll Take You There" (1971, number one hit), "If You're Ready (Come Go With Me)", which earned gold record status in 1973 and "Let's Do It Again" (both number one and gold record status) from the 1974 film of the same title. The Staple Singers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999.
