LEWIS-On Friday, July 31, Miss Clara Henrietta, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Lewis, aged 32 years.
The city of Sauk Centre and vicinity was pained to learn last Friday, a. m.., of the death of one of its most accomplished and esteemed young ladies, Miss Clara Henrietta Lewis, who after but a few days illness passed away at her father's residence six miles from this city. Miss Lewis was a most estimable young, lady, beloved by all who knew her, and an honored member of the order of Rebekahs. The funeral services were held in the Episcopal church, Rev. J.P. Hamilton officiating. The church was beautifully decorated with cut flowers. A quartette consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence, Miss Avis Lawrence and H. W. Bishop furnished the music. After the beautiful and impressive Episcopal service was read the many sorrowing friends accompanied the remains to Greenwood cemetery where the Daughters of Rebekah performed the last sad rite which took their beloved sister from their earthly sight. Following is a testimonial written for the Herald by one of her intimate friends who has known her from childhood.
After a brief illness, Etta C., daughter of William and Emma Lewis has been called to her Heavenlv home. She came to Sauk Centre with her parents in 1866 where she has since resided except while away teaching. As a teacher she was very successful. It requires no stretch of the imagination to see bow her pupils under her charge loved and trusted her —how they were led to higher ideals of life by her genial composition, gracious influence and unobtrusive example. She was a girl of remarkable native ability, and of excellent acquirements. She was generous to a fault, independent in her convictions, loyal to her views and to her friends and she sacrificed herself for them most willingly. Who can measure the value of such a life? In her sickness she was resigned to the Master's will and did not murmur though she knew the time of her departure was at hand.
Her memory is blessed
Her rest is sweet. "He giveth his beloved sleep."
At the Saviour's bidding She has gone the hidden way,
Which has led her, through the shadow, To the land of endless day. (Mrs. S. L. L. )
