Elderly Woman Killed Crossing Church Road
MAPLE SHADE - an elderly woman died and her husband was listed in "very critical" condition after they were struck by a car on Church Road yesterday afternoon not far from their home. Mrs. Sarah Techner, 73, of 131 Great Road, here, died in the emergency room at Cherry Hill Medical Center as a result of multiple injuries. Her husband, Max, 80, underwent surgery and was placed in the intensive care unit of the hospital, a spokesman said. He suffered multiple fractures and internal injuries. Police said William Fargo, 36, of Schoolhouse Lane, Mount Laurel, was the driver of the car which allegedly struck the elderly couple as they crossed the street. Fargo was charged with death by auto and careless driving. Investigating officer Ptl. Michael Brennan said he was continuing the investigation. Witnesses at the scene were to be questioned today. The Fellowship Emergency Squad and the Maple Shade Emergency Squad responded. Police said the roadway was wet and a light drizzle, which had followed a heavy rain, was falling.
