At the age of 17 John joined the United States Air Force, where he served honorably during the Korean war. While stationed at Bergstrom Air Force Base he met his bride, Annie Pearl Etheredge and they were married on October 17, 1954. John loved Texas and decided to stay and raise his family. John and Ann were blessed with a son, Edward Timothy, and a daughter, Audrey Ann. Tim married Belinda Stork and Audrey married Dennis Walker. Both children have been married for 37 years. His family has grown to five grandsons, Lee Walter, John Bird, Denny Walter, Daniel Adams, and Leslie Adams. He has 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Through the years John touched the lives of so many people. He spent his entire life giving himself in public service. He was a master peace officer, a co-owner of Kid Country Day Care, and retired from Travis County Sheriff's Department. He spent over 25 years with the Five Points Volunteer Fire Dept./ESD 1, and was a Bastrop County Constable PCT3. His volunteer service also included the Boy Scouts of America, Bastrop CASA, Travis County Sheriff's Reserve Officer, Bastrop ISD Mentor, and his beloved Mina Masonic Lodge. He loved kids and coached at the Rockne Community Recreation Center. He had a love for “Old Stuff” and belonged to the Sharecroppers, and the Cen-Tex Tin Lizzies Model T Club.
He was a Korean War Veteran, and lifetime member of the VFW Post 2527 of Rockne, and the American Legion Post 533, Bastrop. He was a member of the Cedar Creek United Methodist Church. He touched so many people in so many ways, and I know we will miss some or someone, for this we are sorry.
John was a great man and will truly be missed by all.
