Capt. Way dropped out of college to become a riverboat pilot. His career took him from "mud clerk" to Captain and then to owner of packetboats. He piloted both sternwheel and propeller-driven towboats.

In 1947, he brought the Delta Queen from California to Ohio to oversee her rebuilding. He was the founder and "president-and-editor-for-life" of the Sons & Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen.

He wrote articles and books about river steamboats and told a great story. Whenever the Delta Queen would pass by his house on the Ohio River in Sewickley, the ship would salute him by playing "Beautiful Dreamer" on the steam calliope.
