In 1942 he was credited with the sinking of a German submarine in the Atlantic. Cmdr Vickers was selected for flight school in 1943. He received his wings from the Pensacola Flight School and was redeployed to the Pacific Theater. He took part in the Battle of the Coral Sea and the Marianna's Turkey Shoot. He also flew in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. In 1949 he fired the first air to air Sparrow missile.
