Obit: Benjamin Henry was the son of George W and Harriet Evans/Bevins Virgil. He was born at Albany, NY September 12, 1849 and passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs John Vahle, near Collins, MO, February 5, 1938 at the age of 88 years 4 months and 23 days. Monday morning, January 31, he was stricken with paralysis, from which he never regained consciousness.
When yet a young man, Mr Virgil moved with his parents to Ft Dodge, Iowa, making the trip in an the oldtime covered wagon. He married Helen Eliza Kingsley in Fort Dodge, Webster Co, Iowa on 20 November 1871. They had eleven children: Clara Etta (Mrs James M Learmont) of Humboldt, Iowa, Milton Eugene of Ayrshire, Iowa, Florence Rogene (Mrs Ed McDonnel) of Sioux Falls, SD, Thomas Benjamin of Ayrshire, Iowa, Fannie Eliza (Mrs William Learmont) of Rutland, Iowa, Prince Albert who passed away at the age of eight years, Nellie May (Requa) of Humansville, MO, Edna Bell (Mrs Roy Thompson) of Linn, Kansas, Ruth Jane (Mrs John Johnson) of Alva, Oklahoma, Leon Franklin and Hazel Eldora (Mrs John Vahle) of Collins, MO.
The wife and mother passed to her Eternal Home January 13, 1930. Mr Virgil is survived by the ten children, 17 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, two brothers, John Virgil of Ruthven, Iowa and Harvey Virgil of the Odd Fellows Home at Mason City, Iowa, other relatives and numerous friends.
The family moved from Iowa to Rockwell, Oklahoma in 1898, where they resided until the spring of 1908, when they moved to a farm near Collins, where they lived until the death of his wife, and he has since made his home with his dughter, Mrs John Vahle, near his old home.
He was a home man. Nothing held a higher place in his life than his own family. He knew the hardships of the early pioneer. He was truthful and honest and fair in his dealings with his fellowmen and one could say, "He was a good citizen and a real neighbor at all times."
Although frail in looks he was of sturdy physique. He never was known to be sick in his life, until January of last year. He was bedfast a few days.
To know him was to honor him. He was a good man, a kind and affectionate husband and father.
He and his good wife trod life's pathway hand in hand for 57 years. She left him 8 years ago to travel alone. Now: He is gone but not forgotten, He is free friom earthly pain. God has called him and he answered, And our loss, his heavenly gain.
Funeral services were conducted in the Christian Church at Collins, Monday Feb 7, 1938 by the Rev Albert Gaston of Gerster, the text being John 3rd chapter 4 to 18 verses.
Interment in Marshall cemetery. Pall bearers were Leonard, Joe, Harry, Lester, Elmer and William Vahle.
