Gamaliel Black, 89, died May 3, 2018 at Baptist Reynolds Hospice House, Collierville, TN. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Walter and Tiny Black, his siblings, Geraldine, Alma, and Walter Black Jr., and youngest son, Paul M. Black. Mr. Black was born in Lowndes County, MS and attended high school in West Point, MS. He received a BS degree in Building and Construction from Tuskegee Institute in 1954. He moved to Memphis after college and worked with Edgar Davis & Son Construction as superintendent for 10 years. He taught in the Memphis City Schools system from 1967 until his retirement in 1989. For more than 60 years, Mr. Black served in many capacities as a member of Metropolitan Baptist Church. He was also a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, and Memphis Tuskegee Alumni Club serving as president for many years. Mr. Black was a kind and loving husband and father with a gift for helping others. He leaves to cherish his precious memory his loving wife, Margaret Black; a daughter, Kathy Smith (Roger); a son, David Black (Rita); brother, Rev. Lonzell Black Sr. (Annie) of Macon, MS; four grandchildren, three godchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity will hold a private service at Metropolitan Baptist Church Thursday, May 10, at 5 p.m. Memorial tribute will be given during wake at Metropolitan Baptist Church on Thursday, May 10 from 6 -8 p.m. Graveside service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, May 11 at Forest Hill Cemetery on Elvis Presley Blvd. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be sent in honor of Mr. Gamaliel Black to Tuskegee University, Attn: Alumni Affairs, P.O.
