Charles born 8 Aug 1844 in Fairfield Township, Pennsylvania to Martin & Rachel (Ralya) Strayer.
He served in the Civil War with Company E, 111th Infantry Regiment of Pennsylvania. Charles was wounded in the calf of the right leg by a ball from an exploding shell from the enemy on 17 September 1862 at Antietan, MD and again wounded in the left arm & shoulder by a musket ball during the enagement on 27 May 1864 at Dallas, GA.
Charles married Elizabeth Magdalene Peterman on 10 Sep 1868 in Cochranton. To this union was born Henry Martin, William Joseph, and Racheal Alzina.

Charles Strayer, farmer, P. O. Cochranton, was born in Fairfield Township, this county, August 9, 1844, and is a son of martin and Rachel (Ralya) Strayer. His father, a native of Little York, Pennsylvania, is a son of Daniel Strayer, and settled in Fairfield Township 1832, purchasing a farm which he cleared and improved, and where he lived until 1867, when he removed to Iowa, where he now resides. He had nine children: Miley, Anna, Levi, Charles, Perry, William, Mary A., Nancy J. and Rebecca C. Our subject has always resided in this township, except when he enlisted, September 1861, in the late war, re-enlisting in 1863, and serving until the close of the war. He was at the battles of Cedar Mountain, Rappahamock Station, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and many other engagements. He was Married September 10, 1868, to Miss Elizabeth N., daughter of Henry and Jane (Gourley) Peterman, by whom he has two children: Henry M. and William J. Mr. Strayer has resided on his present farm since 1866. He is a member of the G. A. R.; in politics a Republican.
