George was born in New York about 1810. His parents were William B Virgil 1776-1859 and Sarah/Sally (maiden name unknown) 1779-1858. In 1850 he was in Washington Co, Port Washington Township, Wisconsin. In 1860 he was in Ogle Co, Pine Rock Township, Illinois. In 1870 he was in Linn County, Boulder Township, Iowa. In 1880 he was in Webster County, Iowa. George was a farmer. He married Hannah Theresa Benedict in New York, date unknown. They had at least one child, James E, born 1838 and perhaps a second son named Francis. George married Harriet Evans, probably shortly before 1843. George and Harriet had at least five children together: William George, Benjamin Henry, Harvey E, Laura A and John W/Wesley. They may have had a daughter named Susan.

His obituary in the Northwest Chronicle, a Fort Dodge newspaper, dated Wednesday November 11, 1885 read: "Mr. Geo Virgil, an old citizen of this city, died on Wednesday and was buried yesterday afternoon. Rev. J. J. Dolliver conducted the funeral services."
