Musician, Songwriter, Record Producer. Born Reginald Grant Lucas. He is best known for having to produce Madonna’s debut album and wrote her #1 hit "Borderline," helping to launch one of the biggest stars of the latter 20th Century. He was an R&B and jazz guitarist earlier in his career, playing with Billy Paul in the early 1970’s and then with the Miles Davis electric band of the first half of the 1970’s. Along with percussionist and songwriting partner James Mtume, he wrote some of the classiest soul music songs, hits such as “The Closer I Get to You” by Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway (1979), and “I Never Knew Love Like This Before (1981),” by Stephanie Mills, they were monster smashes that have grown to be true classics. He also worked with such acts as Lou Rawls, The Four Tops, Randy Crawford and more. In 1981, he and James Mtume won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Song for their composition "Never Knew Love Like This Before". He died of heart desease.
