Playwright and author

He wrote many plays, including "The Cocktail Hour", "The Dining Room," and "The Middle Ages". His Broadway debut, "Sweet Sue" starring Mary Tyler Moore, premiered in 1987.

He also wrote the novels "Entertaining Strangers", "The Gospel According to Joe", and "The Snow Ball".

Awarded the McDermott Award for his contribution to the Arts by MIT in 1994. He was named to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1996.
