John A. Robertson, son of George Albert and Frances "Fannie" Jane Stark Robertson, was born on February 3, 1915 in Quincy, Adams County, Illinois and died on Saturday, June 16, 1956 at age 41 near the Rock Island, Illinjois Arsenal. He was drowned after informing his wife he was going for a swim in the Mississippi river near Arsenal Point at Rock Island, llinois. The currents near this area are swift and unperdictable due to the Arsenal Railway and Auto Traffic Bridge that spans this area between the United States Arsenal, located on an Island near the Illinois shore, from which the city of Rock Island gets it's name, and the city of Davenport, Iowa on the north shore. This bridge, which also allows foot traffic, periodically swings open to admit barge and larger boat traffic up and down the river. Apparently he was caught by one of the cross currents formed by this structure and was pulled under. His body was not recovered until the following Wednesday, when it was found by a local fisherman 12 miles further down stream near Andalusia Island. His brother Reco was asked to identify his body and later told members of the family, if it hadn't been for the American Eagle tattoo on his chest, he would not have known it was Albert. He is buried next to his brother Jesse Delbert and parents in the Miller Cemetery near the small village of Atlas in Pike County, Illinois. At the time of burial there was not a grave marker for him but in recent years one has been provided by thoughtful members of his family. John Albert Robertson and Mary Griep were married on June 23, 1950 in Quincy, Adams County, Illinois.
