MARY JANE GRIMES, 1818 - 1901

My great-great Grandmother, Mary Jane Grimes Mayfield, daughter of John and Mary/Nancy (...?) Grimes was born on Saturday, October 10, 1818, most likely in the Shippingport Township area of Jefferson County, Kentucky and died on Monday, March 25, 1901 in the Ursa Township area of Adams County, Illinois. Her funeral was held at her home in Ursa on Wednesday, 27 March 1901 and burial was in the Denson Cemetery, located 1/4 mile to the northwest of the village of Ursa. She was known to everyone later in her life simply, as "Aunt Mary Mayfield" and lived all of her adult life, (about 65 years), in and around the Ursa/Marcelline Township area of Adams County, Illinois, having moved to Adams County at the age of 19 with her husband Uriah Mayfield in the spring of 1836-37 from their home in the St. Matthew Township area of Jefferson County, Kentucky. Her parents and and many other members of the Grimes family made the journey with them and also settled in Adams County.
