Cadet First Class Damian G. Maertens of the Air Force Academy
died at 8:42 PM on Saturday, 28 March 1998 at his home in Puyallup,
WA, after his battle with cancer.
Damian was born in Washington,
D.C. on 17 February 1976. He was a graduate of Rogers High School
in 1994 and has since attended the Air Force Academy in Colorado
Springs, CO, where he was a senior and commander of Cadet
Squadron 15. He was selected for post graduate medical education
upon graduation from the academy. Damian was an Eagle Scout, a JR.
assistant scout master, an assistant coach for the U13 South Hill
Strikers soccer team, and coordinator of the Cadet Catholic Chapel
Liturgical Service participants. He was an avid hiker, camper and
athlete.
Damian is survived by his father and mother, Kenneth and
Marcia Maertens of Puyallup; his brother, Cadet Third Class Nathan
Maertens of the Air Force Academy; his grandparents, Joseph and
Helene Schreiber, and George and Jessie Maertens of Minnesota; as
well as his aunts, uncles and cousins.
A vigil will be held at Powers
Funeral Home in Puyallup at 7 P.M. on Tuesday, March 31. A funeral
mass will be held at All Saints Catholic Church in Puyallup at 10 A.M.
on Wednesday, April 1. Mass will also be celebrated at the Air Force
Academy with burial.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in
Damian's name to the Rando Fund, c/o Mackey, 49 Tolland Road,
North Andover, MA 01845; or to the National Institute of Health
Patient Fund, 9000 Rockville Pike, Building 10, Room 1N252,
Bethesda, MD 20892.
