Possibly due to ill health, in the early 1880s his wife could not continue raising their youngest daughter Clara and she was sent to live with her older sister Hattie who was married and living in the Marshall County area. In little over a year, this transition became permanent; Henry's wife passed on. John and Hattie (brother and sister) married another brother and sister; the Roose siblings. Both families would end up living in Montana after Henry's death while their sister Nellie remained a life-long resident of Marshall County.
NOTE In the obituary below, the reference to 'the farm' indicates a poorhouse or an early version of an old folks home. Much later this facility was called the Marshall County Home then became the Marshall County jail.
