On 13 January 1886, she married George Washington Specht. They had seven children together; Charles Benjamin Sr, Frank Colgan, George Jr, Willie, Katie Chloa, Lora Leona, and Harold C. Sadly, only three of their children reached adulthood but Nellie remembered them every year on the date of their birth with entries in several diaries she kept from 1900 to 1912.
Nellie and George worked hard and were rewarded for their efforts. As farmers, little by little they purchased dairy cows and equipment and eventually relocated to a bigger farmhouse north of Marshalltown. Their dairy business grew to where they made biweekly trips into town to sell and or trade butter and milk at the local grocery store. Their sons, Charles and Frank, along with their daughter Lora, worked alongside them until they started their own families.
In 1918 they decided to retire and bought a house located at 110 North Center Street in Marshalltown. George passed away in 1929. A year afterwards, Nellie started having health problems and was not able to regain her former strength. After four years of ill health, she passed away from asthma and heart trouble.
At the time of her passing Nellie was survived by her son Frank who made his home with his mother, Charles B Specht Sr of Legrand, and Mrs James P Hanson who lived between Albion and Marshalltown. She was also survived by two sisters; Mrs. Hattie Roose and Miss Clara Roberts, both of Eureka, Montana and by five grandchildren; Leona, Bessie, Dorothy, Charles Jr, and Geraldine Jeanette.
