FDNY mourns the loss of retired Captain John T. Vigiano who passed away on Sunday, July 8, 2018. During his 36 years in the Department, he was cited 28 times for his bravery.After being diagnosed with throat cancer in 1984 and seeing how his firehouse took care of him,

His son John Vigiano Jr., was inspired to join the Department.
His other son, Joe Vigiano, was an ESU Detective in the NYPD.
Both of his sons made the Supreme Sacrifice on September 11, 2001 in the attacks at the World Trade Center.
Captain Vigiano spent weeks at Ground Zero searching for their remains.


Captain Vigiano began his career in the FDNY as a Firefighter assigned to Ladder 103 in Brooklyn after graduating from the Fire Academy in 1962.
In 1976, he was promoted to Lieutenant and transferred to Engine 328 in Queens. In 1988, he was promoted to Captain and transferred to Division 15. He then moved to Ladder 176 until his retirement in 1998.
Captain Vigiano had a B.A. in Fire Science and served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps.
He was an adjunct instructor for the Captain’s Management Training Program for the FDNY and the NYS Fire Line Supervisors Training Program.
Captain Vigiano performed extensive volunteer work for veterans, and was named “Man of the Year” by Friends of Firefighters for helping servicemen and women who were wounded or hospitalized.
He volunteered his time to help Goldstar families and wounded Veterans, and also accompanied the United Service Organizations to Iraq to visit the troops.
He organized a group of retirees to visit Walter Reed and Bethesda Naval Hospitals approximately three times a year. The “Vigiano Group” was awarded the Spirit of Hope award by the Department of Defense for their work with Veterans
