EMELINE BRYANT, 1843 - ...Unk

Emeline "Emma" Bryant, my maternal great-grandmother, was born About 1843 in Adams County, Illinois and died, ...Unk, possibly in Adams County, Illinois but more likely than not she would have died at the home of her daughter Julia Ann Powell Sayers, in Linn County, Missouri. Emeline was the daughter of Hiram and Mary A. Crank Bryant and is enumerated with them on the 10th US Census of 1850 for the County of Adams and the Township of Ursa, Illinois. Her father Hiram Bryant, lists his occupation as a farmer and his birth place as Kentucky, while the birth place of her mother Mary, is listed as Tennessee. Emeline Bryant is also enumerated on the 1860 Adams County, Illinois Census for Mendon Township. On this Census dated the 24th day of August 1860, she is first enumerated with her mother and father, Hiriam (sic) [enumerators spelling] and Mary A., ages 50 and 51 respectfully. Emeline's age is given as 18 years. She was also enumerated a second time [probably a day or so later], with the Albert Agard family in Ursa, Adams County, Illinois, working as a domestic, and this time her age is given as 17 years. It is also interesting to note that at the time this census was taken, there were two other individuals by the name of Hiram enumerated with the family of Hiram and Mary Bryant, they were, his son Hiram R. [spelled Hyram R. on his Adams County, Illinois death Certificate, dated, March 2, 1921] age 6, and another man named Hiram [...?], age 18, listed as working as a farm laborer. Due to a birth date of about 1837 for Hiram M. Powell given to me by my cousin Lowell Sayers, I think this 2nd Hiram that was enumerated with the family of Hiram Bryant in 1860, is the same Hiram M. Powell that was to marry their daughter Emeline Bryant, five years later in July of 1865.

Note: It has been brought to my attention that the 2nd Hiram age 18 enumerated with the family of Hiram Bryant on the 1860 census for Mendon Township, was most likely his nephew born in 1841, the son of his brother, George Washington Bryant.

It has also been brought to my attention, that Hiram Powell was earlier enumerated on the 1850 census for Benton Township in Linn County, Missouri. I have not seen this census, so I do not know with whom he was enumerated but he would have been between the ages of 13 and 15 at the time.

Emeline "Emma" Bryant married Hiram M. Powell on Thursday, July 27, 1865 in Quincy, Adams County, Illinois. I have a certified copy of their Marriage License and on it Emeline's last name is mis-spelled as "Bright" instead of Bryant. The name of the Groom has also been mis-spelled on the back of the marriage license, ...whomever filled it out left one "L" off of the surname of Powell. I believe both Emeline and Hiram were probably illiterate and the Adams County Clerk that made the entries on the marriage license, had heard her name pronounced as "Bright" instead of Bryant and whomever filled out the information on the back of the license had left one "L" off of Hiram's last name. Emeline and Hiram Powell are next enumerated with their new family on the 12 July 1870 Census for Mendon, Township, Adams County, Illinois. On the 1870 census there are four children enumerated with she and Hiram M. Powell, they are:

I. David Powell, age 12, born in Missouri (Step-son to Emeline?)
Ii. James Powell, age 10, born in Tennessee (Step-son to Emeline?)
Iii. Julia Powell, age 3, born in Missouri
Iv. Charles Powell, age 1, born in Missouri

COMMENT: Due to the ages of the two oldest boys, it has been suggested that Hiram M. Powell may have had an earlier marriage, but due to Hiram's age, and since he and Emeline Bryant were not married until June of 1865, it is my hypothesis that the two oldest boys enumerated with them may have been nephews of either he or Emeline and were simply boarding with them. The two younger children, I consider to be the children of he and Emeline. ...mrbrtsn

Hiram Powell seems to have moved frequently between Missouri and Illinois and I doubt that he and Emeline ever owned their own home or farm, although there does exist a land patent for a Hiram Powell dated 1854, that signifies that he at one time owned some land in Dekalb County, Missouri. On the later Illinois census he lists his occupation as a farm laborer, so he could have been sharecropping for different land owners which required him to move from farm to farm. My understanding of the act of being a "Sharecropper" was that the land owner provided the farm laborer a place for he and his family to live and he, in return, planted and worked the land for a percentage or "Share" of the crops that were harvested.

Emeline and Hiram had five children in addition to the two older boys mentioned above and one child that died in infancy. As far as I know, all of their children, except possibly Charles, were born in Missouri, the names of the rest of their children were as follows:

V. Elizabeth Powell, b. Abt. 1867
Vi. Fred Powell, b. 1875
Vii. George Powell, b. 1877
Viii. Lucy Bell Powell, b. September 8, 1879 (Browning, Linn County, Missouri)
ix. Arlena "Lena" Powell (My paternal Grandmother), b. August 8, 1882 (Browning, Benton Township, Linn County, Missouri)
