Roman Catholic Cardinal. The oldest of five children, he was born into a noble family. After obtaining a doctorate of law degree at Benevento, Italy, he travelled to Rome, where he sought employment from one of the cardinals there and in 1623 he became chamberlain to Cardinal Maffeo Barberini, who later became Pope Urban VIII. On December 16, 1641, Pope Urban VIII elevated him to the office of cardinal and at the same time appointed him Archbishop of Naples (a vice-realm of Spain at that time), serving in both positions until his death. As Archbishop of Naples, he served as a mediator between the rebels and the government during the revolt of 1647 and was strenuously opposed to increased taxes by the Spanish government. He died around the age of 83.
