PHEBE JANE (THOMPSON) BUTTON was born 11 February 1845 in Gaines, Orleans, NY, daughter of Robert Perry Thompson and Caroline Starkweather. Phebe died 23 August 1895 in Williamsburg, Grand Traverse County, Michigan. She married JAMES AMBROSE BUTTON on the 2nd September 1866 in Mendon, St. Joseph County, Michigan. Her name also appears spelled "Phoebe," however "Phebe" is the way it is on her gravestone and how she signed her name in a poem written on the occasion of her daughter Emma (Button) Masten's death. Phebe Jane Thompson was said to be James Ambrose Button's first cousin. The family tradition is strong and repeated in several branches that James' mother Joanna Thompson and Phebe's father, Robert Perry Thompson were brother and sister.
