Son of Robert Hairston and Ruth Stovall Hairston. He married Judith Sparrell Saunders 9 Feb 1790 in Franklin County, VA.

He was a captain in the Revolutionary War and a colonel in the War of 1812. Over time, he owned approximately 2,000 acres along Nicholas' Creek in Henry County, VA. In January 1782 he was ratified as sheriff of Stokes County, VA by his Excellency Thomas Nelson, Jr.
