Italian Painter. He was probably the best known of the Bellini family of Venetian Renaissance artists. His brother was Gentile Bellini (who was more highly regarded than Giovanni during his lifetime, although the reverse is true today), and his brother-in-law was Andrea Mantegna. He is credited with having revolutionized Venetian painting, moving it towards a more sensuous and coloristic style, by the application of clear, slow-drying oil paints that created deep, rich tints and detailed shadings. His landscapes had a great impact on the Venetian painting school. Among his notable works include "St. Jerome in the Desert" (circa 1455), "Madonna and Child with the Infant St. John the Baptist" (circa 1480), "St. Francis in Ecstasy" (1480), "Christ Blessing" (1500), the "San Zaccaria Altarpiece" (1505), and "The Feast of the Gods" (circa 1514, completed by his understudy Titian in 1529).
