Sarah's husband Abraham had served in the 11th Regiment Volunteer Colored Troops, Heavy Artillery Division, fighting in and surviving the Civil War. Sarah, later widowed, used Abraham's military pension savings to move from New Jersey and to purchase her home at 308 W. High St., Milford, Penna. It would be home to three succeeding generations of her family.
She was a member of the Milford Methodist Episcopal Church, where her memorial service was held.
