WASHINGTON IRVIN MAYFIELD, 1869 - 1963

Washington Irvin Mayfield, son of Henry Crittenden and Amanda Margaret Wade Mayfield, was born in October of 1869 in the Ursa Township, of Adams County, Illinois and died there, in 1963 at the age of ninety-four. He was the name sake of his mother's brother-in-law, Washington Irving Agard, husband of Virginia "Jennie" Wade Agard.

The following story was told to me by my mother Wilma Olive Mayfield Robertson, its about her father, Uriah Lamonte and her uncle "Irvin" who, at the time this story took place, was the the Game Warden for the Bear Creek and Ursa Township Area of Adams County, Illinois;

"... For a time my uncle Irvin Mayfield was a Game Warden for Adams County, Illinois, (this is confirmed in a statement by his mother, Amanda Margret Wade Mayfield, in a letter she wrote to her sister in California, from the Soldiers and Sailors Home in Quincy, Illinois in 1930. In this letter she refers to her son as being the Game Warden) ... One earlier spring day, he had arrested my father for not having a fishing license and for taking to many Crappie. On the next weekend my uncle Irvin saw my father [his brother] loading up his fishing gear and came over to the house and asked my father to show him his fishing license, he just told him, "... I'm not fishing ..." and finished loading his gear. When he left the house in Marcelline my uncle followed him and my father lead him through all the worst roads and mud holes all along Bear Creek and the north bottoms around Marcelline and Ursa Township, and finally he stopped, took his poles and gear to the bank of the fishing hole, baited his hooks, but didn't throw his line in the water, then he waited for his brother to come up and ask for his fishing license, when he did, my father just looked at him and said, "... I'm not fishing ..." he then put his fishing gear back in his old model "A" Ford and proceeded to retrace his route, back and forth all along Bear Creek until, with his brother the Game warden still following him, he stopped at the same exact fishing hole, got his poles and gear out, set up an overnight camp, took his gear down to the creek, baited his lines, threw them into the water then turned to his brother, pulled his fishing license out of the breast-pocket of his overalls, handed them to him and said, "... Now I'm fishing ...".

The following article was taken from the Obituaries in the Mendon Dispatch, 1877 - 1905 and concerns the drowning death on July 4, 1902, of Edna Mae Mayfield, the infant daughter of my grandparents, Lamonte and Lena Powell Mayfield.
