Amanda Margaret Wade, the daughter of Edward and Mary Haggard Wade, was born on Wednesday, April 10, 1849 In Eden/Birmingham Township, (Eden became Birmingham Township after 1850) Schuyler County, Illinois and died in Jacksonville, Morgan County, Illinois on Sunday, August 31, 1941, at the age of 92 years, four months and twenty-one days.
She married Henry Crittenden Mayfield on Christmas Eve, Wednesday, December 24, 1868 in Macomb, McDonough County, Illinois. They lived the better part of their lives and raised their family in and around Marcelline/Ursa Township areas of Adams County, Illinois. Henry C. Mayfield was a veteran of the Civil War and shortly before his death on June 9, 1907, he was admitted as resident #7787 to the Illinois Soldiers' and Sailors' Home in Quincy, Adams County, Illinois . When he was near death he requested to be discharged from the Veterans Home so he could die at his home in Marcelline. Amanda, as his widow, continued to receive a Widow's pension in the amount of $30.00 a month for Henry's service during the civil war and on October 9, 1923, at the age of 74, was herself admitted as a resident to the Veterans Home in Quincy, Illinois. She remained a resident of the home for the next eighteen years, until shortly before her death in 1941, when due to her advanced age, the Veterans Home in Quincy was unable to provide proper care and treatment for her and she was transferred to the Illinois State Hospital, in Jacksonville, Morgan County, Illinois, where she later died.
